Saltfish is simply fish that is covered in salt. More specifically, saltfish is usually a white fish that has been preserved by drying and salting. West Indians love their saltfish so we had to share tips on how to prepare saltfish.
Drying and salting fish was to preserve the shelf life of the fish. This method is a Scandinavian method which can be found in countries like Norway. Although there are fridges and freezers, saltfish is still a big deal in the Caribbean. Many of our traditional dishes feature saltfish.
In order to prepare saltfish, you must get rid of the salt. If you plan on using the fish, you must prep it ahead of time. Because of how many salt is used, you need to get rid of it. Soaking the saltfish overnight is best, along with boiling it for a couple of minutes before using it.

How To Prepare Saltfish
Ingredients
- 1 lb Saltfish preferably boneless
- Water
Instructions
- In a bowl, add the saltfish and cover with water.
- Let it soak for 1-2 hours. (Or overnight)
- Drain the water and add fresh water. Let it soak again for 1-2 hours.
- You may need to repeat the soaking at least three times.
- Add the saltfish to a medium pot of boiling water. Boil for 30 minutes.
- If the fish is still salty, drain and add fresh water and boil again for 30 minutes.
- When the fish is done, drain and set on a plate.
- Using your hands or a fork, break up the saltfish.
