Recipe video:
So plantain chips are my ultimate guilty pleasure. I can eat them couple times a day and not get sick of them, it’s my second favorite thing next to fries. But just like fries they are deep fried, so I like to find a healthier alternative to my faves. Thankfully, I came up with these delicious oven baked jerk plantain chips.
Usually, plantain chips are deep fried, that is why they tend to be extra crispy but I wanted to share a healthier alternative. Although, I don’t believe that the classic version is all the way unhealthy. Maybe they are and I am just in denial. I had to share a “healthier” version.
I opted for the baked kinds not only for the health reasons but because I love to mix things up. Plantain chips are famously known for being fried so I wanted them to be known as a baked snack. Going even further with things, I decided to use jerk seasoning in this recipe.
Jerk seasoning is not only made for chicken. It can be using in almost anything, things like burgers, fries and plantain chips. I thought it would be a great combination because of the spiciness and the sweetness from the plantains. I love it!
Plantain chips recipes are easy to find all over the internet, so I had to switch it up. Baked Jerk Plantain Chips came out of wanting something different and creative to eat and to share.
Before diving into the recipe, I want to share some TIPS & TRICKS with you guys first.
TIPS & TRICKS
- Plantains: Initially, I wanted to use ripe plantains for this recipe but I knew baking them would not make them crispy. In order to get crispy plantain chips, I opted for green plantains that were a light green color. Baking the plantain chips was not that tricky but it was a little risky. The reason why I say risky is that these chips were not as crispy as the fried kind. However, these chips were just as tasty as the fried ones. Cutting the plantains the right way is crucial. If you cut the plantain too thick then you will not achieve the crispy texture. I highly recommend cutting them as thinly as possible. If you cannot achieve thin chips then I suggest you use a vegetable slicer.
- Jerk seasoning: This is the key ingredient for this recipe. I used my homemade dry jerk seasoning, which I will be sharing one day. I suggest using an authentic jerk seasoning so that your chips can be flavorful. There is no special secret for this, other than it has to be the dry jerk seasoning and not the marinade.
- Baking the chips: In my opinion, the hotter the oven the crisper the chips. I baked mines at 200°C/400°F, that is what worked for me and that is what made my chips come out crispy. Baking the chips is easy, all you need to do it spread them out on a baking tray and that is it. However, cooling the chips is necessary. I have found that the cooling process ensures the crispiness in this recipe.
