What is Coquito?

Coquito means “little coconut” in Spanish.

Many people see this drink as a Puerto Rican version of the American Eggnog.

Coquito origins are unknown since there isn’t any concrete evidence of the first drink being made.

To make Coquito is fairly simple, the main ingredients are coconut milk, coconut cream, Puerto Rican rum and sweetened condensed milk. Of course, the preparation of the popular drink varies but the ingredients remain the same.

Puerto Rican Style Coquito

Ingredients

Tea :

  • 1 cup Water
  • 1 Cinnamon sticks
  • 8 Allspice berries
  • 6 Cloves
  • 3 Star anise

Milk base :

  • 1 15 oz can Coconut cream (preferably Coco Lopez brand)
  • 1 14 oz can Coconut milk (preferably Goya brand or homemade)
  • 1 14 oz can Condensed milk
  • 1 12 oz can Evaporated milk
  • 2/3 cup Dark or white rum (preferably Don Q)
  • 4 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1 tsp Nutmeg

Instructions

Making the tea :

  • In a pot, add water, star anise, cinnamon sticks, cloves and allspice berries.
  • Simmer on a medium-low heat for 5 mins.
  • Remove from heat then cover and let it steep for 10 minutes. Let it cool.

Making the milk base :

  • In a blender, add coconut cream, coconut milk, evaporated milk, sweetened condensed milk, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla extract.
  • Blend everything together.
  • Transfer the milk base into a mixing bowl.

Mixing everything together :

  • Add the rum and the tea to the milk base and whisk everything together.
  • Pour into bottles and chill for at least 4 hours before serving.

Notes

  • The longer the coquito chills the better it tastes.
